Artists as texts
The image, language of the songs and the sound of an artist all contribute to what makes an artist a text. As a person an artist is not actually considered a text but in the case of their complete media product they are referred to as a text.
This includes how they appear in music videos, posters, adverts and appearances. Meaning it's not just their songs that make them an artist but their overall projection of themselves; their image is just as important as the songs.
I will be looking at not only how they're created but also why they decided to present themselves in that particular way.
Their decision can be influenced by several different aspects including:
- Certain trends within the music industry can influence appearances
- Their appearance could change as their music does; if the lyrics evolve than it is only expected that their appearance changes to compliment the language change
- An artist is also heavily influenced by their fanbase / audience; they might grow up as their fans do, music changing to still appeal to their original fans
