Album Cover Analysis

Halsey - BADLANDS

  • Main focus of the cover is her

  • However, her name and album title cover the majority of her face, contrasting the fact it seems like she is the priority by being centred.

  • Her outfit is rather lavish, maybe suggesting she's rich and can afford feather jackets

  • The blue of her hair contrasts against the red of the rocks and the other pale colours of the cover, almost matching the sky above her

  • What we can see of her face isn't showing a very happy expression, seeming quite sorrowful and sad, maybe choked with unpleasant emotion

  • The background behind her is of red rocks and blue sky, matching the dystopian vibe of the music itself - barren and bare

  • The bottom of the cover picture has a ripped effect, like it was a part of a collection of photos on a piece of paper that someone has put together only to have this one torn off

  • The cover also has a seemingly rumpled effect, again like it was a piece of paper crumpled in a pocket only to be smoothed out and stuck to a piece of white paper

  • However, the small white words on the right hand side read BDLNDS 00-10237 and the small grey 17 at the bottom combined with the side profile shot make it seem like a mugshot, identifying Halsey, emphasising the effect of BAD being in the title. Making her a criminal in a red world.

  • The bold writing that's vaguely blurry adds to the rumpled effect the cover has
