Editing Research: Transitions

In order to effectively and comfortably use transitions within our music video, we began to look at how they are used in other music videos to understand what would work best in ours, and what kind of transitions work in different situations and music video types.

You can click the name of each song to watch the music video. 1. Ariana Grande - Problem ft Iggy Azalea This music video uses more subtle transitions to switch between cuts. They are used more to impress and visually entertain than to subtly and smoothly change. For example, a stretch transition is used as a way to switch scenes, which could easily have been done with a fade or cross-fade. This suggests that they are used more for entertainment. Although this is not the initial reason we chose to use transitions, we feel there is a possibility in exploring different transitions such as zooms and slides in order to visually interest the audience a little bit more.

2. BTS - War of Hormone This music video uses transitions to create smoother and more subtle elements. It creates a flow to the video as well as hiding particular aspects the audience shouldn't see. For example, the use of a zoom transition into one of the character's faces, helps to hide the actions of another character, who sneaks behind the former to lift him onto his shoulders. Through this transition a flow is created that adds to the humorous and entertaining element of the audience's experience, and also means there are less expected events. We are not essentially using transitions to cover up anything, but have began to understand how transitions can create a smoother video that flows better, and is more appealing and entertaining to the audience.

3. Fifth Harmony - Worth It This music video uses slide transitions in order to show each member, as well as to visually entertain. There is little narrative to this video, therefore it is mainly to establish each performer and allow the audience to understand their role and position. We want our audience to be aware of our character and their role in the video, therefore will use zoom out transitions in order to establish our character in relation to their surroundings, and the lack of other characters involved in the story.
