Editing Research: Use of Text

In order to create a more visual and eerie element to our music video, we decided to include some lyrics of our song within the video. The lyrics we have chosen are: "I'm meaner than my demons, I'm bigger than these bones" We have chosen to have the lyrics fading as a hand passes across them. We therefore decided to research how different music videos use text to create an effect. Click any of the names of the songs to watch their music video. 1. We the Wild - Body Electric (Blue)

This music video flashes the word "blue" in a bold, italic font. This helps to emphasise the main themes of the song and video, as well as creating a more visually interesting video. Although the text doesn't necessarily tell the story or create a particular atmosphere, it works to give the video a more aesthetic feel, with the pastel colours and italic font. Although this isn't the same effect as we want our font to have, we have learned from this that it is more eerie and unexpected when using a smaller and thinner font, than a bold and large one such as in this video.

2. All Time Low - Weightless This music video uses text to tell a story that differs from that of the lyrics. The text is used to represent the personalities of different characters within the narrative, and describes them. This is a larger and bolder font, similar to that of Body Electric but with more diverse fonts to suit each character. We are following the lyrics of our music video, therefore will be using it to follow the running narrative instead of creating a new one. However, the idea of the text following something is important to our use of it, and will therefore be beneficial to examine how this is effectively done in this music video.

This music video uses text as a way to remind the audience of a particular idea or style. The fonts and words used such as "pow", are related to that of a comic book style, therefore bringing a sense of understanding to the audience and

allowing them to interpret the ideas portrayed in the music video. We are using text as a way to portray the eerie and unknowing style of our music video, therefore we have been able to understand how important font and size is in portraying themes and messages.
