Editing Research: Filters and Overlays
In order to understand how filters and overlays work to create an effect on a music video, we began to look at different music videos to see how they could inspire us. 1. Marina and the Diamonds - Primadonna
This music video uses a TV - style overlay to create the impression of popularity and being seen by many people. The TV screen pixel effect portrays the idea that the character is famous, and works to outline how this could have an effect on her life and representation. Although this is a seemingly opposite concept to what we have, it has inspired us to an extent: we are now able to understand how filters and overlays can create a particular interpretation or theme.
This music video uses a paint overlay at the beginning, in the corners, to create a more fun and vibrant atmosphere. It helps to bring colour and entertainment to the video and, though not necessarily contributing to a plot-line or portraying a message, it keeps the audience interested and entertained. We are looking for an effect that is more narrative-based, but now have a clearer understanding as to how we can use filters and overlays in a number of different ways.
3. Lana Del Rey - Summertime Sadness This music video uses old camera overlays and a more sepia-style filter in order to conform to a more vintage theme. This works to develop the idea of memories and reliving moments in time, and also helps to suggest that something happened in the past. This filter would work well with our eerie and unknowing atmosphere, but the sepia filter would make it seem more older than it realistically is. However, we have started to understand how overlays can suggest time and era as well as just a story: this means we don't have to obviously explain elements such as time period, and can use subtle editing such as an old camera overlay to explain this itself.
